Bio

An attractive, blonde performer, Katherine Heigl first received notice for her work in Steven Soderbergh's "King of the Hill" (1993). Beginning her career as a child model, she appeared in catalogs for both Macy's and Sears before disillusionment with that line of work made her decide to try her hand at acting. Heigl made her feature debut opposite Juliette Lewis and C. Thomas Howell in the coming-of-age story "That Night" that was shelved for two years before finally being released in 1993. Her breakthrough role came opposite Gerard Depardieu in the Hollywood remake of the French romantic comedy "My Father the Hero" (1994), in which she played a precocious 15-year-old who poses as the lover of her father in order to impress the boy of her dreams. While the film was not well received, Heigl's efforts were applauded. After appearing in other movies like "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory" (1995) and "The Bride of Chucky" (1998), she turned to the small screen to portray Miranda in a 1998 NBC adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" set during the Civil War. The actress made her series debut as Isabel, an alien disguised as a high school student living in New Mexico, in the critically lauded "Roswell" (The WB, 1999-2001; UPN, 2001-2002), in which fans of the cult hit discovered that the former child star had decidedly grown up: her curvaceous figure made her a favorite photo spread subject of men's magazines.

During her "Roswell" stint, Heigl continued to appear in features, including "100 Girls" (2001) and "Valentine" (2001), a horror film starring David Boreanaz and Denise Richards, playing a medical student who meets a sudden demise. Also in 2001 Heigl was cast in NBC's "Critical Assembly," a two-hour thriller in which she and Kerr Smith played concerned college students who build a nuclear device to illustrate the need for a change in national priorities but device falls into the hands of a terrorist--shelved when its storyline was deemed too close for comfort to the events of September 11, 2001, the film was eventually broadcast in 2003. Post-"Roswell" she guest-starred on an episode of UPN's update of the classic television series, "The Twilight Zone" (2002) as a woman who goes back in time to stop one of the most notorious murders in history. Other projects stacked up, including "Descendant" (2003), a psychological thriller inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher"; as Isabel in MTV's modernized update of Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" (2003); and a starring sting as Romy in the ABC telepic "Romy and Michele: In the Beginning" (2005), a prequel to the 1997 feature "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" playing the role originated by Mira Sorvino.

The actress returned to series television in the sharply drawn medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" (ABC, 2005 - ), playing Izzie Stevens, a young intern who paid for her medical career by modeling, and pays for it when her colleagues disparagingly refer to her career in front of the lens.
